The best way to determine if you have a legal issue or if you need legal advice is to ask a lawyer. In Philadelphia most criminal defence attorneys and personal injury lawyers will chat with you to understand the issue and decide if you have a legal problem, free of charge. Our advice is to call a few and listen to what they have to say before you decide which one to hire. Once you have decided to hire a lawyer, you need to pick one and the best way to do this is by word of mouth. Ask your friends, your co workers, minister, relatives, anyone you trust who may have hired one in the past. Ask them who they used and if they did a good job. There are also many reliable online resources that can help with selecting the lawyer you need that is experienced in your legal problem. The Bar association can also refer you to individual ones that are familiar with your particular need. Look in the local phone book for numbers and then call some, remembering our earlier advice.
When you have selected the lawyer you think you will use, you need to determine what fees are charged for things like the initial consultation. Go meet the lawyer in their office, and if you then decide to use their services make sure you ask for an estimate of costs for the case.It would be better to get this in writing and most lawyer will do this for you. Also, do note that you as the client are responsible for filing fees and court costs.
On your first face-to-face meeting with the lawyer, you should really be prepared to ask questions. Lots of questions. Suggestions relating to the facts of the case and any legal issues regarding the facts of your situation. Some good questions would be “Based on my situation, do I have a legal issue?” You will need to make sure you fully explain the facts as you have them to the lawyer. They cannot help if you do not discuss the situation with them. “How much will this cost me?” Make sure the lawyer explains fully the circumstances as they understand them and they should be able to give you an indication of the costs involved in the action. Some lawyers will charge a retainer fee. This is and advance payment you make to the lawyer as part of their overall fee, but it means they will work for you from that point. Its advisable to find out the hourly rate of the lawyer and an approximation of the number of hours to be spent on your case – this will give you an indication of your overall costs. Another good question is “How long will it take to resolve?” A good lawyer will be able to advise you how long it has taken them to resolve similar cases in the past so try to find out if your case is any more complex than these previous ones and if this could effect the time scales.
